New Year, New Anxiety: How to Deal with Anxiety as the Year Starts

Reframing What New Beginnings Look Like

With the new year on the horizon, I feel excitement and worry. It offers a fresh start, an opportunity to set new goals, explore new experiences, and leave behind the past year's difficulties. However, the uncertainty of what lies ahead creates some anxiety. This feeling makes it hard to think clearly and turns the future into a daunting unknown, even when it holds great potential.

The end of this year feels more frightening for me. I worry about being happy and excited for what’s to come. I've grown so accustomed to survival mode, finding comfort in unhealed habits and negative views on life. It’s strange, but I often prefer those feelings over joy or hope. It's one of the ways the mind can trick us.

Under Pressure: Setting Future Goals

Also, the pressure to set goals and reach new milestones can be overwhelming. I often worry about living up to my standards and fear disappointing others again. The idea of a fresh start can feel daunting, especially when my mind is filled with what-ifs.

-What if I fail?

-What if things don’t go as planned?

These concerns can overshadow the anticipation of the upcoming year. I’m beginning to understand that it’s okay not to have everything mapped out. Although anxiety may push me to strive for perfection or make big changes, I realize growth often happens in small, quiet steps. The little victories, gradual progress, and moments of kindness toward myself truly count.

I keep reminding myself that it’s not about having complete control. It’s about moving forward slowly and finding calm in the journey. Even with the anxiety of what’s ahead, I can embrace uncertainty, knowing I have the strength to handle it. Perhaps this is the real gift of the new year: the chance to keep growing, learning, and being there for myself, no matter what comes my way.

Looking Ahead

As the new year starts, many people experience both hope and anxiety. It’s normal to be concerned about change and what lies ahead. If feelings of anxiety become overwhelming, it's perfectly fine to reach out for support. Set small, clear goals to help reduce stress and gain confidence. Take a moment to pause and welcome the fresh beginnings that come with the year. Whether you jot down your thoughts or share them with someone, you can take steps toward finding calm this year. Begin today and aim for a year filled with growth and understanding.

One way is through the support of others including this blog space I created. Thank you for stopping by and stay tuned for more teasers and updates leading to the debut o...

Finding Strength While Living with Mental Illness

Give Your Mental Health A Voice I started this blog to shed light on the symptoms and experiences connected to mental illness. If you are living with depression and anxiety you might often struggle with symptoms that aren't always obvious. Mental health and mental illness are not something that everyone understands or even acknowledges. This can be due to cultural norms, societal norms, and of course the dreaded "s" word , stigma. I admit that I have let the stigma surrounding mental health affect how I view my experiences.  "I put undue and unfair pressure on myself to not act or feel a certain way." I've often felt uncomfortable with my own experiences, and I haven’t always been the kindest or most patient with myself. But that's something I'm actively working on—and it's a change that will keep unfolding. The world outside can be tough enough, so it's even more important that we learn to be understanding and compassionate with ourselves....
