Each month, I shine a light on powerful voices that challenge the stigma around mental health by sharing honest, transformative journeys. This month’s feature explores the inner work it takes to move beyond survival and into healing. It’s not just about managing symptoms, it’s about awakening to the patterns we’ve inherited, the losses we’ve carried, and the truths we’ve buried. The following story offers a heartfelt look at how pain can be a turning point and how advocacy often begins with our own awakening.
Carrying the Invisible Burden: A Mental Health Journey
Through Generational Trauma and Personal Loss

Mental Health Advocacy and Impact
After experiencing a personal loss and working through the grieving process, I began to recognize patterns and behaviors shaped by my upbringing-many of which were quietly keeping me stuck and unfulfilled. That pain pushed me to seek deeper healing, beyond just coping. I turned to therapy, self-reflection, spiritual practices, and community support. Through that journey, I realized that so many people in my community were carrying similar invisible burdens- generational trauma, unhealed wounds, and silent struggles that had never been addressed.
That realization lit a fire in me. I didn't want to just heal for myself wanted to help others access the same tools that changed my life. That's what led me to this work. I'm not coming from a place of perfection, but from experience. I've faced setbacks and breakthroughs, and through it all, I've found purpose in supporting others on their own healing path.
What People Often Miss About Therapy and Mental Health Professionals
I wish more people-especially in the Black community-understood that going to therapy doesn't mean you're crazy or broken. That stigma has kept too many of us from seeking help. Therapy isn't about fixing something that's "wrong"-it's about becoming whole. It's a space for understanding yourself, breaking unhealthy cycles, and learning new ways to cope and grow.
Many of us were taught to stay silent, to pray it away, or just "be strong." But true strength is facing your pain and doing the work to heal. Mental health professionals are there to support you, not judge you. They offer tools that help you thrive, not just survive. Our community carries so much generational trauma, systemic pressure, and everyday stress that often goes unspoken. Therapy is a radical act of self-care and liberation. The more we normalize it, the more space we create for healing and transformation.
Nurturing Yourself While Helping Others: How to Prioritize Your Mental Well-Being
I've learned the importance of not holding things in. I talk through what's bothering me-whether it's with a friend, mentor, or therapist, because releasing what's on my heart helps me feel lighter and more balanced. I also make time for therapy, meditation, and quiet reflection. But what really keeps me grounded is living a life of purpose. Doing work that aligns with who I truly am gives me the motivation to stay consistent with my mental wellness. It reminds me that caring for myself isn't optional, it's necessary if I want to keep showing up for others in a real and healthy way.
Shattering Myths: One Common Mental Health Misconception You Need to Know
A big misconception is that mental health doesn't matter or isn't real. The truth is, your mental health affects everything you feel, how you handle stress, how you build relationships, and how you show up in the world. In my opinion, it's just as important as physical health, if not more. We put so much energy into taking care of our bodies, but we often neglect our minds. Mental wellness deserves the same level of care and intention. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away- it just delays the healing. Taking care of your mental health isn't a weakness; it's an act of strength, clarity, and love.
