Veteran Mental Health Recovery: Understanding the Hidden Battles After Service
In 2022 alone, 6,407 U.S. veterans died by suicide (VA 2024 Annual Report). While the suicide rate among women veterans decreased by 24%, it still remains higher than that of non-veteran women (2024 VA Report PDF). Male veterans continue to face the highest overall suicide numbers, highlighting that mental health recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey.
About one in three women veterans report experiencing military sexual trauma (VA Women’s Health, National Center for PTSD). Both men and women veterans continue to carry the invisible wounds of PTSD and depression, underscoring the importance of targeted support and recovery strategies.
These statistics remind us that healing doesn’t stop when the service ends; it’s a lifelong process that demands compassion, understanding, and access to care tailored to every veteran’s story.
